Salah is the name for prayer in Islam. As Muslims we believe that Allah is our only GOD. He is perfect in every way and that’s why we worship him. We are taught to pray 5 times a day. Salah is the most important responsibility for a Muslim to fulfil.

Salah was ordained on the believers as a source of great benefit. It is an opportunity to communicate directly to Allah. At the time of its revelation the Muslims rejoiced over its huge benefits. It is like winning a free contract to talk to your most beloved whenever you like. It is however unfortunate that many Muslims today view it as a burden and do not appreciate why and how it was revealed.

Salah is one of the fundamental elements of Islam. It is the most stressed upon tenant of Islam in the Quran and Sunnah. A few examples of its importance are mentioned below;

Worship at fixed times hath been enjoined on the believers.[1]

Be guardians of your prayers, and of the midmost prayer, and stand up with devotion to Allah.[2]

And enjoin upon your people worship, and be constant therein. We ask not of thee a provision: We provided for thee. And the outcome is for righteousness.[3]

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullah son of ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah () said:

(The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on five (pillars), testifying (the fact) that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is His bondsman and messenger, and the establishment of prayer, payment of Zakat, Pilgrimage to the House (Ka’ba) and the fast of Ramadan.[4]
